Anambra Police Celebrate One Month Without Gunfire

The Anambra State Police Command is marking a significant achievement—one full month without a single gunshot anywhere in the state.

During a recent press briefing, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu commended the efforts of security personnel in maintaining peace. He highlighted that no gunfire incidents were recorded from either law enforcement or criminal elements, a milestone that reflects the growing commitment to security in the state.

Before Orutugu’s appointment in February 2025, Anambra faced serious security challenges. In response, the government imposed restrictions on certain traditional healers and fraudulent religious figures suspected of fueling criminal activities.

The Commissioner emphasized Anambra’s rich history and contributions to Nigeria, citing notable figures such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. He stressed that a peaceful environment is essential for the state’s continued growth, especially in Onitsha, which houses Nigeria’s largest market and attracts traders from across the country.

Orutugu also addressed the previously common sit-at-home protests, calling them unjustified and noting that the current security situation is encouraging businesses and visitors to return.

While expressing optimism for sustained peace, he assured residents that the police force would remain vigilant against any threats. He emphasized the need for proactive policing and innovative security strategies rather than solely relying on traditional law enforcement methods to maintain order in Anambra State.
