A fresh controversy has emerged in Nigeria’s public space following a standoff between social media personality Verydarkman (VDM) and the President of the Arewa Youths, Ambassador Abdul DanBature. The conflict centers around VDM’s criticism of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, over comments linking social media to the spread of terrorism. VDM dismissed the Sultan’s statement, calling it emotional and arguing that social media also serves many positive functions.
According to Daily Post, VDM’s remarks did not sit well with Abdul DanBature, who swiftly responded by issuing a 48-hour ultimatum demanding a public apology. The Arewa Youths President insisted that VDM retract his comments and offer an apology to the Sultan and the people of Northern Nigeria. According to him, the remarks were disrespectful and an affront to one of the most revered figures in the region.
The situation has sparked widespread debate, particularly on social media platforms, with Nigerians split over the issue. While some support VDM’s right to freedom of expression and defend his opinion on the misuse and benefits of social media, others believe he crossed a line by directing his criticism at a traditional and religious leader of such high standing.
DanBature’s statement also carried a broader appeal for respect towards traditional leadership, especially figures like the Sultan of Sokoto who hold both cultural and spiritual significance. He emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of such institutions in the face of evolving digital and public discourse.
He said, “We want Verydarkman to quickly withdraw his statement and apologize to the Sultan of Sokoto and to the people of Northern Nigeria.”
