Ebonyi Varsity Releases Academic Records Of Student Who Committed Suicide Over Exam Failure

The Ebonyi State University has pronounced Prof. Amaechi Enyi , the lecturer fingered in the death of a student, Favour Ugwuka, who allegedly committed suicide for repeatedly failing his course, as not guilty of the allegation.

This is even as the school released the academic record of the student, showing she had problems in many courses from her year one to final year.

Favour, a final year student in the Department of English Language in the university, reportedly committed suicide recently after failing English 416. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ogbu Chigozie, who expressed his dismay over the drastic action of Favour, sympathised with her family.

The VC said, the university has a system where if after examinations a student feels that he or she is marked down by a lecturer, and if the student is confident of what he or she wrote in examination and feels the lecturer deliberately marked him/her down, the student can call for his/her script for a re-mark which would be sent to the Vice Chancellor’s office.

The VC added, “we have our Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee and if any lecturer is found victimizing a student, such lecturer will definitely be sanctioned and called to order and the School Management in collaboration with the security agencies are still investigating the incident.

The Dean, Faculty of Humanities at the university, Professor Ngozi Emeka Nwobia, who has released Favour’s academic status to the school, disclosed that the late student failed many courses from her first year to her final year with full details.

She said, “I have the certified true copy of the results of Ugwuka Favour Chinonye with the registration number; EBSU/2018/89726, for the Department of English Language and Literature who registered in the year 2018/2019 and that is her 1st year.
