Tension has gripped Ifon town in Ondo State following the abduction of Nelson Adepoyigi, a ward chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), by unknown gunmen on Monday night. The kidnappers are reportedly demanding a hefty ₦100 million ransom for his release.
According to Naturenex, the incident unfolded around 10 p.m. as Adepoyigi was parking his vehicle at his residence in Ifon, located within Ose Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses revealed that the abductors ambushed him, beat him with sticks, and whisked him away into the night.
A family source, speaking to Vanguard, explained that Adepoyigi’s wife was alerted by his cries for help but by the time she rushed outside, the assailants had already made away with him.
It didn’t take long before the abductors reached out to the family to state their demands. “Yes, the gunmen have contacted the family members and have demanded ₦100 million to secure his release,” the source confirmed.
However, the family has since entered into negotiations with the kidnappers in a bid to reduce the ransom. “We have told them to reduce the ransom to a reasonable amount,” the insider added, suggesting that discussions are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command has officially confirmed the incident. State police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, said, “I can confirm to you that the chairman of APC ward five was kidnapped at the entrance of his farm along the Ifon-Owo road.”
