Popular Nigerian singer David Adeleke, famously known as Davido, has made good on his word by finally meeting with highlife legend Bright Chimezie in Lagos. The Afrobeat star, known for staying true to his promises, recently reached out to the veteran musician via a video call, during which he revealed that his latest track with Omah Lay, With You, was influenced by Bright Chimezie’s classic song Because of English. During their conversation, Davido also “promised to link up” with the iconic singer.
It didn’t take long for Davido to turn his words into action. Just a few days after making the promise, he went the extra mile by giving Bright Chimezie a VIP-style welcome in Lagos. Taking to his Instagram page, the 30BG boss shared a touching video capturing the moment he received the legendary musician.
In the clip, Davido personally stepped outside to wait by the entrance of a building as Bright Chimezie arrived in a chauffeured car. Upon his arrival, Davido joyfully hailed the highlife icon. The most memorable part of the video came when Davido respectfully bowed before Bright Chimezie as a gesture of deep admiration.
After exchanging greetings, Davido then led the veteran musician inside the hotel, where staff members were on standby to give the music legend a royal welcome. Alongside the video, Davido added a heartfelt caption on Instagram that read: “My Daddy @officialbrightchimezie is here in Lagos.”

Asha Gangali Reacts to Davido’s Move
Meanwhile, Afrobeat singer Asha Gangali, now known as YoungOG, also shared his thoughts on the new bond between Davido and Bright Chimezie. Reflecting on the situation, he remarked:
“According to information in the media, Davido reached out to Bright Chimezie after releasing the song, With You, which samples Chimezie’s classic track Because of English. This post-release outreach supposedly led to criticism from fans and commentators, who felt that Davido should have sought permission beforehand. Some speculated that the outreach was motivated by potential legal concerns rather than genuine admiration.”
He further expressed his professional take on the matter, saying:
“However, with my experience as a YoungOG in the music industry, I’m 100% sure that Davido’s team would have reached out to the veteran and taken care of the licensing requirements before proceeding with releasing the song commercially. This is just a classic PR strategy playing out.”
When asked whether Bright Chimezie could take legal action against Davido if proper permission wasn’t secured before sampling his line, Asha Gangali, a former board member of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), stated:
“Yes, Bright Chimezie could potentially sue for copyright infringement if the sampled portion of his song is deemed substantial and was used without proper authorisation. However, in this case, Chimezie has publicly expressed appreciation for Davido’s acknowledgement and has not indicated any intent to pursue legal action. Of course, industry experts know that Davido has taken care of his copyright-related business before releasing any song commercially. Remember, he is signed to a major American label; they don’t make such incompetent mistakes.”
