Nigerian Doctor Fatally Shøt in Benin City

A physiotherapist attached to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has been killed by unidentified gunmen in a tragic incident that occurred last Friday.

The unfortunate event was officially confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of UBTH, Joshua Uwaibi, on behalf of the hospital’s management. According to Uwaibi, the institution has formally contacted the Edo State Police Command and sent a copy of the petition to the Department of State Services (DSS), urging a thorough investigation and the apprehension of those behind the killing of the physiotherapist, identified as Ogunniyi.

In Uwaibi’s words, “A physiotherapist with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was shot dead on Friday while on the way to have his lunch.”

He further explained that, “It was gathered that a vehicle was chasing another one. The one behind was shooting at the one in front and a stray bullet hit the deceased in the neck. He was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department but he didn’t make it.”

Uwaibi concluded by noting, “We have written to the Edo Police Command and copied the DSS calling for investigation and the need to bring the killers to justice.”

The tragic incident has since triggered protests by health workers within the hospital, expressing outrage over the killing of their colleague.

In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force announced the arrest of several suspected criminals, including kidnappers and arms dealers, during various operations nationwide.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that several weapons were recovered during the operations.

Adejobi described the raids as major successes in the ongoing efforts of the Nigeria Police to combat violent crimes in different states, emphasizing that the actions, driven by credible intelligence, reflect the Force’s resolve to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
