Police arrest 9 protesters for flying Russian flags in Maiduguri

The Nigeria Police on Tuesday, August 6, said it arrested nine protesters for flying Russian flags in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city.

Confirming the arrest of the protesters, the state commissioner of police, Yusuf Lawal, while delivering a situation report of the nationwide protest in Borno said the suspects were arrested in Zannari Tamsu area of Gwange Ward, Maiduguri.

The protesters including Abdulhamid, Mohammed Abubakar, Mohamed Ibrahim, and Abba Hassan – all residents of the area – were arrested on Monday, August 5.

He said, “Additionally, five more protesters were apprehended in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, carrying Russian flags.

“The suspects, Bashir Ahmad, Musa Lawan, Abba Mallam, Habibu Auwal, and Inusa Abdullahi, were transferred to the Crack Squad for discreet investigation, and diligent prosecution.”

Lawal also noted that the situation of the protest in Borno State in general has been calm.

He also assured that the Borno State Command would continue to monitor and patrol every location to ensure public safety.
