Popular Nigerian social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.
According to reports, the arrest followed VDM’s outspoken criticism of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) over alleged unauthorised deductions from his mother’s account.
Naturenex gathered that the controversial influencer had taken to social media earlier to publicly accuse the bank of making suspicious withdrawals in the name of loan repayments from his mother’s bank account — transactions she allegedly knew nothing about.
Confirming the incident, VDM’s legal representative, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, disclosed on Friday that his client was arrested at Area 3 in Abuja.
“JUST IN: VDM arrested by the police at GTB. Spoke to them before he was arrested. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime,” Adeyanju posted in an update on 𝕏.
Providing more context in a subsequent statement, the lawyer revealed that a team of police officers had taken VDM into custody at the bank alongside his friend, C Park. However, Adeyanju confirmed that VDM’s mother, who was also present at the time, was not detained.
“They arrested VDM at GTB. He was arrested with his friend C Park but they left his mom alone,” Adeyanju stated.
Before the arrest, VDM had taken to social media to narrate their visit to a GTBank branch in Abuja, where they sought clarification and requested copies of the account statement to trace the unauthorised debits.
He wrote, “Myself and my mom just arrived at GTBank to get an explanation for the constant debit from her account by GTBank in the name of loan repayments that she never took.”
“In this year alone, see the amount of times she has been debited with different amounts.”
“We have requested her bank statements so we know when the debiting started.”
“So far, in this year alone, there have been more than seven debits on loan repayments.”
“GTBank staff are cooperating—hopefully, we’ll know why they keep doing this.”
