Russia Commends Nigeria for Backing UN Resolution

The Russian government has expressed appreciation to Nigeria for its support of a United Nations resolution aimed at tackling the glorification of Nazism.

This commendation came from Ambassador Andrey Podyolyshev of the Russian Federation Embassy in Nigeria during a photo exhibition held in Abuja. The event was organised to honour the Soviet Union’s victory in what is historically known as the Great Patriotic War.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this conflict — fought about 80 years ago as part of the wider World War II — is remembered as one of the deadliest in history, with millions of lives lost.

The exhibition, hosted by Podyolyshev, served not only to honour the victims of the Second World War but also to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet defeat of Nazi Germany. Additionally, it aimed to raise awareness about the tragedies of war and the lessons from that era.

While addressing guests at the event, Podyolyshev voiced Russia’s appreciation to the Nigerian government. “I would like to thank Nigeria for supporting Russia in the UN’s resolution combating the glorification of Nazism,” he said.

He went on to highlight Nigeria’s role during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, where the country voted in support of the resolution, which was designed to oppose behaviours that promote modern-day racism, discrimination, xenophobia, and intolerance.

“We truly appreciate Nigeria’s cooperation, and we look forward to continued collaboration on international matters, especially within the United Nations,” Podyolyshev added.

The Russian envoy also acknowledged Nigeria’s growing ties with the BRICS economic bloc, describing it as a positive step and expressing optimism for deeper partnership opportunities between the two nations in the future.
