Simon Ekpa Faces Terrorism Incitement Charges in Finland

Finnish prosecutors have officially brought charges against a man identified by local outlets as Nigerian separatist agitator, Simon Ekpa, for allegedly promoting terrorism through online activities.

Naturenex report that the charges come after authorities concluded a thorough investigation covering his activities in Lahti, Finland from 2021 to 2024.

In a formal announcement, the Finnish National Prosecution Authority disclosed that a Finnish national was charged with “suspected public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.”

Though the accused was not named in the prosecution’s statement, Finland’s public broadcaster YLE confirmed that the individual involved is Simon Ekpa, a separatist figure who describes himself as the head of a faction within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ekpa has long advocated for the independence of Nigeria’s southeastern region — a position that has generated widespread tension and incidents of violence over the years.

Claiming leadership of the Biafra Republic’s government-in-exile, Ekpa was taken into custody in November last year. The Finnish prosecution noted that he has remained behind bars since his arrest and continues to deny all allegations levelled against him.

Holding both Nigerian and Finnish citizenship, Ekpa has been a prominent voice championing the secession of the southeast — the same agitation that led to the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s, a conflict that claimed countless lives and left deep scars on the nation.

Aside from his controversial activism, Ekpa also previously served as a local council member for the conservative National Coalition Party in Lahti, a city located to the north of Finland’s capital, Helsinki. He once held a seat on the city’s public transport committee.
