The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its stance on impartiality and adherence to due process in relation to the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party (LP).
This assurance was given by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Sam Olumekun, during a visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja by key Labour Party figures on Wednesday. The delegation, led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, appealed to the Commission to officially recognize Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the party’s rightful national chairperson.
According to Naija News, the LP leaders presented their case, citing a recent Supreme Court verdict in support of their demand for Usman’s recognition.
Following the meeting, INEC issued a statement confirming that Governor Otti handed over a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the party’s leadership dispute.
The statement emphasized that the discussions between both parties were constructive and focused on strengthening democratic processes.
“A high-level delegation of the Labour Party (LP), led by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, today Wednesday visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to discuss key developments within the party.”
“During the visit, Governor Otti formally presented a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the party’s leadership. He noted that the meeting was aimed at fostering clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.”
“The delegation was received by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, and other National Commissioners. Both parties engaged in discussions centered on enhancing collaboration and reinforcing democratic values.”
“Mr. Olumekun reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the rule of law in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.”
