Tinubu Speaks on Rivers State Political Crisis, Calls for Rule of Law

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has addressed the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara to uphold the rule of law for peace and stability in the region.

During a meeting with leaders of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the importance of respecting legal institutions and court decisions. The statement, issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the President’s concern over the situation and his prior efforts to prevent the crisis.

Tinubu acknowledged that he had anticipated the political tensions in Rivers State and had taken steps to mitigate them. He reminded the stakeholders that adherence to the constitution and court rulings is non-negotiable.

“This is a nation governed by the rule of law. Without it, I would not be here as President,” Tinubu stated. “The judiciary plays a crucial role in maintaining democracy, and its decisions must be respected.”

He urged all parties involved in the crisis to implement the necessary agreements and legal resolutions, emphasizing that political leaders must act in the interest of peace and stability.

“I am placing the responsibility in your hands,” he told the PANDEF delegation. “Please, return home and assist in implementing the court rulings as soon as possible. Guide the governor toward the path of peace and stability.”

Beyond addressing the Rivers State crisis, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region. He acknowledged the significant contributions of the area to Nigeria’s economy and promised continued investment in its growth.

“The Niger Delta is the backbone of our nation’s economy. We must take care of it to ensure continued prosperity,” he said.

He also praised the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and called for collective efforts to enhance regional development.

King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass Kingdom and Co-Chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude for the President’s dedication to the South-South region. He assured Tinubu of the group’s support, emphasizing that his administration’s initiatives were appreciated.

Obong Victor Attah, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State and another PANDEF leader, urged the President to intensify efforts in resolving the political crisis in Rivers State, citing its potential impact on national stability.

The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including former governors, lawmakers, traditional leaders, and representatives from various interest groups within the Niger Delta.
