#EndBadGovernance: Slain Protesters Must Not Die In Vain –Obi
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed grief over the deaths of several Nigerians during the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.
He said on Saturday on his X handle that the protesters died in the battle for a better Nigeria and expressed hope that their legitimate demands would be addressed, and Nigeria would improve.
Daily Trust reports that some protesters were killed and many others injured, following the commencement of the nationwide hardship protest, which started on Thursday. The protest is scheduled to last 10 days.
“I wish to most sincerely pass my condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. I deeply mourn these brothers and sisters of ours, who have lost their lives in their struggle for a better nation.
Sanusi to protesters: Don’t be used to destroy Kano
The 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II has called on the inhabitants of the city not to allow themselves to be used to destroy it, the north as well as the country.
Addressing newsmen at the palace, Kofar Kudu as news broke that protesters had returned to the streets despite the curfew imposed to check widespread violence, he condemned the violence that erupted in the state on Thursday in spite of appeals by Governor Abba Yusuf for a peaceful demonstration.
Further condemning the violence which led to loss of lives, injuries and destruction of properties, Sanusi described the incident as a major setback for Kano State.
95% of Borno protesters underaged – Zulum
Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno has alleged that 95 per cent of the youths that participated in Thursday’s violent protests in Maiduguri were children under 14 years.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zulum made this known in a broadcast to the people of Borno where he also declared the lifting of the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state.
Zulum said: “Over 95 per cent of those who participated in the so-called Thursday protests were children under 14 years. Most of them do not know why they are protesting.
NELFUND approves N2.5bn for disbursement to 22, 120 students
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has approved N2,530,235,750 to be disbursed as loan to 22,120 students.
The organisation said so far, six of the 12 institutions have received full payment of their institutional fees, covering over 20,000 students.
In a statement yesterday by the Head, Media and Public Relations, NELFUND, Nasir Ayitogo the agency said the total amount disbursed to these institutions stood at N2,026,163,340.
