Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has reacted to widespread rumours claiming he refunded over ₦500 billion to the Delta State Government amid an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The former governor, through his media team, has firmly denied the allegation, insisting no such transaction took place.
The rumours had circulated suggesting Okowa discreetly refunded the massive sum in a bid to avoid possible prosecution and maintain some degree of political relevance in the state. Reports implied the move was part of a secret understanding between Okowa and the EFCC aimed at softening any potential legal consequences.
Okowa Breaks Silence Through Spokesperson
Addressing the issue, Okowa’s Chief Press Secretary, Olise Ifeajirika, issued a statement debunking the claims.
“It’s not true that my boss, Okowa, returned such money,” Ifeajirika stated, dismissing the speculation entirely.
He clarified that while the EFCC had indeed invited the former governor for questioning, presenting him with certain documents, no money had been refunded. The Chief Press Secretary emphasized that the investigation remains active and no conclusions have been reached.
EFCC Probe Still Ongoing, Says Okowa’s Team
According to Ifeajirika, EFCC officials have been carrying out inquiries in Delta State, speaking to several individuals linked to the former administration. He stressed that assumptions about the investigation’s outcome were premature.
“We believe that the investigation is still ongoing. It is when they conclude and establish a case that they can ask for a refund or go to court,” he explained.
The spokesperson reiterated that no funds had been returned to either the Delta State Government or the EFCC at any point since the investigation began, countering the viral claims making rounds online.
EFCC Yet to Substantiate Allegations as Okowa Maintains Innocence
As the anti-corruption agency continues its probe, the rumours about a ₦500 billion refund remain unverified. Okowa’s recent reaction underscores the intense political spotlight still trailing his tenure as governor, with both public interest and regulatory scrutiny surrounding his administration’s financial records.
For now, the former governor’s camp remains firm, standing by their position that no such repayment occurred, while the EFCC’s investigation is expected to proceed in the coming weeks.
