The Vatican has disclosed that Pope Francis passed away as a result of a stroke, which led to a coma and eventually cardiac failure. According to the official communication, the stroke caused a rapid decline that culminated in “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse,” thus bringing an end to the 88-year-old pontiff’s tenure as leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Health Conditions Behind the Pontiff’s Decline
Medical details provided by Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of Vatican City State, highlighted a history of serious health issues that likely exacerbated the impact of the stroke. These included episodes of acute respiratory failure resulting from bilateral pneumonia, the presence of multiple bronchiectases, as well as chronic conditions like hypertension and Type II diabetes.
The report indicated that such pre-existing ailments significantly increased the likelihood of complications. These ultimately contributed to the series of medical events that led to his death.

Dr. Arcangeli, who signed the medical declaration, formally documented the cause of death and the method used to determine it.
“I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above,” he wrote.
The diagnosis was confirmed using electrocardiographic thanatography, a widely recognized procedure for registering the cessation of heart function.
