Court Throws Out £950 Trillion Rights Suit Against Atiku Abubakar, Others

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit seeking an eye-watering £950 trillion in damages against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several others. The case was brought by a businessman, Tunde Omosebi, who alleged that his fundamental rights had been violated by the defendants.

In a judgment delivered on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Justice James Omotosho described the suit, numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/767/2024, as “highly unreasonable.” The judge ruled that the case was procedurally flawed and lacking in merit, leading to its dismissal.

According to Daily Nigerian, the originating motion was filed on June 5, 2024, by Omosebi, who named Atiku Abubakar, Hallies & Partners Ltd, Daniel Mbohok, and Clifford Odibe as the first to fourth defendants. Along the line, Omosebi amended his suit to include three additional individuals without the court’s permission, eventually expanding the list of defendants to 13 as of May 5, 2025.

In documents attached to his application, Omosebi identified himself as a businessman and politician, claiming to hold positions such as the chairman of the Federal Executive Council and the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He alleged that he earned his income from these roles, alongside contracts and investment projects, all of which were detailed in a corporate document.

Omosebi further accused agents of Hallies & Partners Ltd of assaulting and intimidating him at his office on July 6, 2023. He claimed the alleged incident left him with threats and degrading comments that infringed on his freedom and personal dignity.

In his legal action, Omosebi demanded a staggering £950 trillion as compensation for what he described as the assault on his dignity, intimidation, and emotional trauma. He also urged the court to compel the defendants to issue a public apology, both in local and international newspapers, magazines, television, and other media platforms of his choosing.

However, in delivering his verdict, Justice Omotosho emphasized that the judiciary must safeguard its resources by striking out cases that are frivolous or baseless. He explained that the numerous irregularities and procedural breaches in Omosebi’s suit meant it lacked any legitimate grounds for consideration, ultimately leading to its dismissal.
