Oluwafemi Opesusi, the father of Faith Opesusi, the 19-year-old Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidate who tragically took her own life after receiving a disappointing score, has opened up about the heartbreaking incident.
Faith, who had aspirations of studying Microbiology at the university, reportedly performed well in the 2024 UTME but was devastated when she received a score of 146 in the 2025 examination.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Pidgin, Oluwafemi explained that the result shattered his daughter’s hopes. “My daughter scored high during last year’s Jamb exam. This year, they gave her 146. The pain made her take her own life,” he recounted.
The grieving father expressed his disappointment over the tragic turn of events and noted that the result released this year did not reflect what he believed to be his daughter’s true performance. He also lamented that if Faith had confided in them about how she was feeling, the family would have comforted and encouraged her to remain hopeful.
“Kids of these days always feel bad. She was devastated and disappointed when she saw the result,” he added.
Faith’s older sister, Opeyemi Opesusi, also shared the events of her sister’s final moments. According to her, Faith began vomiting and when asked what was wrong, she revealed that she had consumed a poisonous substance.
“She started vomiting, and when I asked her, she said it was because she had taken a poisonous substance. It was at the hospital that she died,” Opeyemi narrated, describing Faith as a hardworking and humble young woman who was never afraid to express her thoughts.
The incident occurred while Faith was staying with her sister in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
In the aftermath of widespread concerns about the conduct of the 2025 UTME, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, admitted that a technical error had affected the scores of thousands of candidates. He offered an apology to the affected students and their families and announced that a rescheduled examination would commence from May 16, 2025.
