Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has made a startling revelation, accusing some prominent serving politicians in Abuja and the National Assembly of being the masterminds behind the violent crises plaguing the state.
Naturenex reports that Governor Alia made the allegation on Friday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television. He described the situation as deeply troubling and “extremely unacceptable.”
Speaking on the broadcast, the governor claimed these unnamed political figures were not only sponsoring the attacks but were also actively providing support to those carrying them out. According to him, while some of these politicians appeared focused solely on safeguarding their personal ambitions and political positions, it was his duty as governor to protect the lives and interests of ordinary citizens.
Without mentioning specific names, Alia disclosed that a judicial panel had already been set up to investigate the root causes of the sustained violence in Benue. He revealed that an interim report from the panel had already implicated several influential individuals and promised to act decisively once the final report is made available.
In his words: “It is very, very unsettling because top politicians who are very functional and are in the National Assembly and are in Abuja, are the architects and arrowheads of not just instigating, but harbouring and keeping these people and feeding them in the bushes, and taking care of all their needs and buying all the other gadgets for them.
“This is extremely unacceptable. If they do not love the lives of the people and they’re only fighting for their own position, I think I am serving the interest of the common masses and it is a concern to me, and it is my right to protect it.”
Governor Alia further explained that the state’s judicial panel was tasked with uncovering the reasons behind both internal and external attacks on communities within Benue.
He added: “We set up a judicial panel to sort out for us why we kept having attacks from within and from without, and we have received an interim report. Between Tuesday and Wednesday next week, I am going to get a full report from the panel.
“So once we receive this report that is coming, we are going to take it up and take it up very seriously. There are quite a lot of big names that are mentioned here, so this is where we are.”
