Nigeria Mourns as Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha and Ex-CJN Mohammed Uwais Pass Away Same Day

Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the deaths of two respected figures from different walks of life — one from the world of music, the other from the judiciary.

Renowned Highlife maestro, Mike Ejeagha, has passed on at the age of 95. Ejeagha, whose songs turned Igbo proverbs and folklore into captivating musical experiences, died on Friday, June 6, 2025.

According to Naturenex, the music legend, widely known for his famous hit “Gwo Gwo Gwo”, drew his final breath at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, a facility operated by the Nigerian Army.

His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, during a conversation with Vanguard on Friday night.

Mike Ejeagha held sway over Nigeria’s airwaves in the 1980s, known for a distinctive style of folk music deeply rooted in Igbo cultural wisdom. His songs not only entertained but also passed across age-old proverbs and lessons that connected generations of listeners.

While the nation was still coming to terms with the loss of the iconic musician, another prominent figure’s passing was also announced.

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, has died at the age of 89. His family confirmed the news in a statement released on the evening of Friday, June 6, 2025.

Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Justice Uwais held the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006. He earned immense respect within the legal community for championing judicial independence and pursuing critical reforms aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the nation’s courts.

Throughout his distinguished career, Uwais was admired for his steadfast commitment to justice, constitutional principles, and democratic values.

Announcing his passing, the family expressed their grief and submission to divine will, stating: “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With hearts heavy yet full of gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation.”
