Public Outrage as Peter Obi’s Campaign Icon Yusuf Alabi Lands in Kirikiri Prison

Yusuf Alabi, the young man who captured national attention during Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign in Lagos, is currently being held at Kirikiri Correctional Facility on charges of theft and involvement in a street altercation. The news has sparked intense backlash, as many believe the accusations are part of a targeted attempt to discredit him.

Alabi rose to prominence after he was photographed standing defiantly in front of Obi’s campaign convoy, an image that became symbolic of youth engagement during the presidential race. Since then, he has been celebrated as a figure of hope and resilience. However, recent developments have painted a darker picture.

According to local reports, Alabi was apprehended after an encounter with a group of neighborhood thugs who allegedly seized his phone and later turned him over to the police. Some community members have accused him of theft and disruptive behavior. But close associates and observers argue that the charges may be fabricated, possibly as retaliation for the attention and financial assistance he received after his rise to fame.

Sources claim that tensions arose after Alabi reportedly failed to share monetary gifts and donations received from supporters. Allegedly, this bred resentment among certain individuals in his area, which may have led to the setup and subsequent arrest.

His first court hearing took place on March 27, with the next session expected on April 28. So far, neither the police nor judicial authorities have released an official statement clarifying the circumstances of his arrest.
