The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially issued a notice of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. Reports indicate that the Assembly’s decision aligns with ongoing political tensions in the state.
Although the exact date of service remains unclear, multiple credible sources confirmed the development on Monday, March 17, 2025.
This latest move comes amid a prolonged political standoff between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The notice of misconduct, reportedly sent to Assembly Speaker Martin Amaewhule, references Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended) as the legal basis for the action.
The document states:
“In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other extant laws, we, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby forward to you a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State in the performance of the functions of her office.”
Following a Supreme Court ruling in February 2025, which reaffirmed Amaewhule and his faction’s legitimacy, speculation has grown that the Assembly is preparing to impeach Fubara.
During a media briefing, Wike stated that if Fubara had committed an impeachable offense, lawmakers had every right to remove him. He emphasized that all actions must adhere to due process and the rule of law.
Additionally, Tony Okocha, chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged Governor Fubara to either step down or face impeachment proceedings.
