SERAP Urges Tinubu to Ensure Safety of NYSC Member Facing Alleged Intimidation

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure the safety of Ushie Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos State who claims to be facing intimidation following her criticism of the government.

The issue began when Uguamaye posted a viral TikTok video lamenting the rising cost of living and economic hardship under President Tinubu’s administration. In her post, she described Tinubu as a “terrible president” and expressed frustration over inflation and poor living conditions, even referring to Lagos as a “smelling state.”

Shortly after, she alleged that NYSC officials contacted her, demanding she delete the video, and later summoned her to appear before a panel at the NYSC secretariat in Eti-Osa on March 17, 2025. She also expressed concerns about her safety, claiming that her personal details were leaked, leading to increasing threats.

In reaction to the situation, SERAP released a statement on Sunday, March 16, 2025, emphasizing that freedom of expression is a fundamental right. The organization urged the federal government to prevent further intimidation of Uguamaye and ensure her safety.

SERAP’s statement read:
“Every citizen has the right to criticize their government without fear of retaliation. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right. If this threat is not withdrawn, we will pursue legal action.”

“The NYSC must stop treating criticism as a crime and immediately end the intimidation, harassment, and threats against Ms. Ushie Uguamaye.”

“The administration must direct the NYSC leadership to guarantee her safety and security.”

This situation has sparked national debate on free speech, democracy, and government accountability, with many questioning the limits of criticism and citizens’ rights to express grievances without fear of retribution.
