Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser on Communication to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration with significant progress in improving Nigeria’s electricity supply.
According to Tunji, the current administration has added 1.5 megawatts to the national grid in under two years—a feat that he said contrasts sharply with the four decades it took to achieve an increase of 4,000 megawatts prior to Tinubu’s tenure.
Speaking during an interview on News Central on Monday, Tunji noted that key policy decisions made by the Ministry of Power were instrumental in driving this improvement.
He emphasized that many Nigerians are already witnessing better electricity supply in their homes and businesses due to these changes.
“The Ministry had to make some tough calls to get us to this point,” Tunji said. “Before President Tinubu came into office, power generation was stuck at just under 4,000 megawatts. The last notable progress in electricity generation happened in 1984 when we reached about 2,000 megawatts. Over the next four decades, we only managed to increase it to 4,000. But under this administration, in less than two years, we’ve added another 1.5 megawatts.”
He added, “What this means is that both households and commercial entities across the country now have access to more reliable electricity. Things weren’t always like this, and while the economy has faced major hurdles, we’re beginning to see improvements.”
