ASUU Warns FG of Impending Anarchy Due to Hunger and Starvation in NigeriaThe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has warned the Nigerian government of an impending anarchy and chaos due to hunger and starvation among the populace.

The union stated that the government’s adoption of neo-liberal policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank would plunge the country into serious uncertainty.

During an emergency press conference in Kano, the coordinator of ASUU, Dr Abdulkadir Muhammad, called on the government to drop the anti-people IMF-World Bank policies and implement the agreement it signed with the union.

The agreement includes the renegotiation of the Federal Government-ASUU 2009 agreement, which has eroded the salary of university lecturers by 90% due to the rise in the exchange rate to the dollar.ASUU members have started receiving partial payments of their seven-and-a-half-month withheld salaries, but the union called on the government to pay the remaining balance.

The Kano zone ASUU also called on the Kaduna State Government to immediately and unconditionally pay the withheld May to September 2022 salaries of staff of Kaduna State University.

However, the union urged the government to urgently review the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) Act to check the proliferation of universities in the country in the absence of adequate provision for funding.

ASUU warned that failure to address these issues would lead to anarchy and chaos in the country.
