“You Call Yourself Catholic”: Reverend Father Message Catholics Who Favor NSPPD Over Church Practices

A Nigerian Catholic priest, Reverend Father JoshuaMary, has stirred online conversation by addressing a growing trend among Catholics who actively participate in Pastor Jerry Eze’s New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations (NSPPD) while neglecting foundational Catholic practices.

In a recent post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the priest expressed concern over self-identified Catholics who consistently join and promote NSPPD broadcasts but fail to attend daily Mass, receive the sacraments, pray the Rosary, or read the Bible.

Father JoshuaMary’s post reads: “You call yourself Catholic, yet you join NSPPD and share the link on WhatsApp daily. But you don’t go for Mass daily, you don’t pray the Rosary, you don’t receive the sacraments, you don’t read the Bible… You are a miracle seeker not a God seeker.”

NSPPD, an online prayer revival led by Pastor Jerry Eze, has gained immense popularity in recent years, attracting both Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal audiences with its fervent prayer sessions and testimonies of miracles. However, the priest’s message was a call to Catholics not to let their devotion drift away from the essential rites and traditions of the Church.

His comment triggered reactions from both Catholics and non-Catholics, many of whom shared their thoughts on faith practices, personal experiences, and the balance between Catholic doctrine and new spiritual movements.

One user, @marvelfairs, wrote: “Pst. Jerry is busy making his money! Recently, a former Pentecostal church member (who converted to a Catholic) made a thought-provoking statement. She said ‘The Pentecostals work so hard to seek God’s face, but the Catholic Church has made it so easy through the Blessed Sacrament.'”

@Kelechu37066234 added: “If ONLY some knew the power of the Mass, they would commit themselves to it. Sadly, some are eager to see some ‘drama’ before they have faith that something supernatural has taken place. Nonetheless, we bless GOD for the lives touched through his servant on NSPPD.”

Another X user, @Emmanue45595641, acknowledged the priest’s concerns but offered a balanced view: “People can be encouraged to attend Mass, pray the Rosary, and read their Bible while still remaining prayerful. Some miracles lead people to God. On a personal note, NSPPD has strengthened my faith, and I’m still a committed Catholic. People show devotion in diverse ways.”

Similarly, @Zeekah33 testified: “If only Catholics knew the power in the holy mass. The job I have today is a miracle from attending mass daily and receiving the sacrament.”

@S_i_x__1_5 emphasized the spiritual depth of the Eucharist: “The sacrifice of the new law. The sacrament of the Holy Eucharist gives life to the soul.”
