The ongoing trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been adjourned until May 2, 2025.
According to Naturenex, the Federal High Court handling the case admitted into evidence an extra-judicial statement made by Kanu in 2015, shortly after he was apprehended by the Department of State Services (DSS).
This development came after a DSS operative, who took the stand as the first prosecution witness, presented the statement in court. To maintain security, the witness’s identity remained undisclosed and was referred to as PWAAA, while testifying behind a protective screen.
The operative recounted to the court how he led a security team that arrested the IPOB leader on October 14, 2015, inside a room at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos International Airport, following Kanu’s arrival from the United Kingdom.
In addition to the extra-judicial statement, the witness presented video footage of interrogations conducted after Kanu’s arrest. The court was also shown four suitcases containing a range of personal items allegedly recovered from the defendant’s hotel room, which included gadgets linked to his Radio Biafra broadcasts.
Trial Judge, Justice James Omotosho, officially accepted the items into evidence, marking them as exhibits in the treasonable felony case the federal government has brought against Kanu.
