Two Army personnel are feared dead following an attack on a truck carrying five officers in Ogwu-Ikpele community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident occurred around 8:10 am on Tuesday, as unidentified gunmen ambushed the officers, also leaving one injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who laid an ambush at the Amaja axis of Ogwu-Ikpele, attacked the soldiers before escaping into nearby bushes. The officers were reportedly transporting oil production workers from Ogwu-Ikpele to Umunzarabia when the attack happened.
Following the incident, the Army has reportedly intensified security measures in the area, with ongoing heavy gunfire reported. Concerns have arisen about possible reprisal attacks by the military in response to the assault.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the police command was not yet briefed on the incident and could not confirm details.
Attempts to obtain official comment from the Army spokesperson in Anambra, Lt. Col. Jonathan, have been unsuccessful as he has not responded to calls and messages regarding the attack.
